Basic and appropriate biology – species specific (rat) (EU module 3.1)
The majority of the Learning Outcomes of module 3.1 are centred on understanding the fundamental nature and biology of the animals. Given that “even the most causal of scientists are studying the product of evolution” (Berdoy 2002), the starting point for these experts will be approaching such aspects by highlighting the evolutionary basis of the animals whenever relevant. This not only constitutes a useful framework on which to address the module LOs but it also feeds into broader aspects of reproducibility and external validity, highlighting the importance of working within the grain of their biology.
