Recognition of pain, suffering and distress – species specific (rat) (EU module 5)
For these modules multimedia resources will be amply used to illustrate normal condition and behaviour for the two laboratory rodent species, as well as how these are affected by poor welfare. All relevant factors affecting animal health and welfare - environment, husbandry, procedures - will be covered, minding the similarities and differences between the welfare needs of mice and rats. Quizzes on severity classification of species-relevant examples of procedures of all severities, will help consolidate knowledge on this topic. The real-case scenarios will also illustrate the importance of frequent and competent monitoring for reducing severity of procedures.
